Feline Stress / Over-grooming
Valerian, catnip & Bach flower remedies to reduce psychogenic alopecia from stress
Safety notice β MEDIUM
Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.
Valerian has additive sedative effects with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other CNS depressants. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery when combining.
Catnip (Nepeta cataria β Stress Reduction)
While catnip's initial response is excitatory, the post-catnip period (20β30 minutes after the rolling/vocalising response subsides) is characterised by a prolonged calm, relaxed state in responsive cats. Regular catnip exposure has been used to reduce stress-related over-grooming by providing a positive enrichment outlet that occupies the cat mentally during times that would otherwise trigger compulsive grooming.
β οΈ Only 50β70% of cats respond to catnip (genetic receptor). Response desensitises with daily use β use maximum 3β4Γ/week with breaks. Avoid in pregnant cats. Over-grooming that causes skin lesions requires veterinary assessment to rule out pain, medical causes, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Valerian Root (Cats β Stimulant-Calming Response)
Unlike in dogs where valerian is a sedative, cats respond to valerian similarly to catnip β with an initial excited response followed by a prolonged relaxed calm. This response makes valerian a useful enrichment tool for stressed cats prone to over-grooming, providing a natural outlet for stress relief.
β οΈ Valerian root has a very strong unpleasant odour to humans but is attractive to cats. Offer in a well-ventilated area. Not for internal consumption at dog doses in cats β the enrichment use described here is purely behavioural/olfactory.
Passionflower (Low-Dose Cats)
Low-dose passionflower glycerite provides gentle anxiolytic support for cats with stress-driven over-grooming. By reducing background anxiety levels that drive the compulsive behaviour, passionflower can reduce the frequency of stress-induced over-grooming episodes.
β οΈ Use at low doses only. Veterinary-formulated products are preferred over adapting dog doses. Persistent over-grooming causing alopecia (hair loss) and skin lesions requires veterinary assessment.
