Quercetin (natural antihistamine)
Sophora japonica / Allium cepa
Quercetin is the most evidence-supported natural antihistamine for children with seasonal allergies β stabilises mast cells and prevents histamine release before symptoms occur.
Preparation:
- Quercetin supplement (from Sophora japonica extract) combined with vitamin C (enhances absorption).
- Or foods: onions, apples, berries, capers (highest quercetin food source).
Dosage:
- Children (4β12y): 100β250 mg quercetin + 100 mg vitamin C, 2Γ daily (begin 4β6 weeks before allergy season).
- Teens: 250β500 mg quercetin + 250 mg vitamin C, 2Γ daily.
Avoid if:
- Not combined with anticoagulants
- Start before allergy season for prevention β less effective when symptoms are established
Stinging Nettle Leaf
Urtica dioica
Freeze-dried stinging nettle has RCT evidence for hay fever relief β natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory without the drowsiness of pharmaceutical antihistamines.
Preparation:
- Freeze-dried nettle capsule or tea.
- For children who accept it: nettle tea with honey.
- The freeze-drying process is critical β heat-dried nettle loses much of its antihistamine activity.
Dosage:
- Children (5β12y): 300 mg freeze-dried extract, 2Γ daily.
- Teens: 300β600 mg, 2Γ daily.
- Or nettle leaf tea: 1β2 tsp per cup, 2Γ daily.
Avoid if:
- Use freeze-dried extract β standard-dried nettle is much less effective
- Potential diuretic effect with high doses
Butterbur Root Extract (Petasites)
Petasites hybridus
Clinical RCTs show PA-free (pyrrolizidine alkaloid-free) butterbur extract is as effective as cetirizine antihistamine for hay fever, without causing drowsiness β the only natural hay fever remedy with this level of evidence.
Preparation:
- PA-free standardised extract only β this is critical safety requirement.
- Commercial 'Ze339' or 'Petadolex' extracts.
- Capsule for children over 5.
Dosage:
- Children (5β12y): 25 mg PA-free extract, 3Γ daily.
- Teens: 50 mg, 3Γ daily.
- Begin before allergy season.
Avoid if:
- ONLY use PA-free standardised extracts β raw butterbur contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids toxic to the liver
- Not for under 5 years
- Not in ragweed/Asteraceae family allergy
