Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterised by repeated episodes of partial (hypopnoea) or complete (apnoea) upper airway obstruction during sleep, causing oxygen desaturation, sleep fragmentation, and sympathetic nervous system activation — with profound downstream effects on cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive health. In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) — the most common form — the upper airway pharyngeal muscles relax during sleep, allowing the tongue, soft palate, and pharyngeal walls to collapse and obstruct airflow. Arousal from sleep restores airway muscle tone and breathing, but prevents restorative deep sleep. These cycles repeat dozens to hundreds of times per night without the patient's awareness.
