HPV Support

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally — the WHO estimates that virtually all sexually active people will acquire at least one HPV infection during their lifetime. HPV is a double-stranded DNA virus comprising over 200 identified genotypes, classified into 'low-risk' types (primarily HPV 6 and 11, responsible for 90% of anogenital warts — condylomata acuminata) and 'high-risk' oncogenic types (HPV 16 and 18 account for approximately 70% of cervical cancers and also drive oropharyngeal, anal, vulvar, vaginal, and penile cancers). The virus infects keratinocytes — the surface cells of skin and mucous membranes — and integrates its DNA into the host genome. Two viral oncoproteins drive cancer risk: E6 binds and degrades p53 (the 'guardian of the genome'), and E7 inactivates the retinoblastoma protein (pRb), together removing the cellular brakes on uncontrolled proliferation. In the vast majority of immunocompetent individuals (approximately 90%), the immune system successfully clears HPV within 1–2 years through a CD4+ T helper cell and CD8+ cytotoxic T cell response. Persistent HPV infection — when the immune system fails to eliminate the virus — is the necessary precondition for cancer development, which explains why immunocompromised individuals face dramatically higher HPV-associated cancer risk. The natural history of cervical HPV follows a spectrum: infection → cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 1–3) → invasive cancer — a process typically taking 10–15 years when undetected. HPV vaccination (Gardasil-9) provides highly effective primary prevention. Regular cervical screening (Pap smear and/or HPV co-testing) remains the cornerstone of secondary prevention and must continue regardless of any natural protocol. From a holistic perspective, the central goal is immune optimisation to support natural viral clearance — the immune system IS the treatment. This requires: supporting cell-mediated immunity (the T cell response that eliminates HPV-infected cells), reducing the chronic inflammation that impairs immune surveillance, optimising the local cervical and vaginal microbiome (Lactobacillus dominance is protective against HPV persistence), ensuring adequate micronutrient status (folate, vitamin D, zinc, selenium — all directly involved in DNA repair and immune cell function), and supporting liver clearance of oestrogen metabolites (oestrogen metabolites activate HPV E6/E7 oncoprotein expression). Evidence-based natural interventions include EGCG from green tea (clinical trials show regression of CIN lesions), indole-3-carbinol and DIM from cruciferous vegetables (shift oestrogen metabolism toward the protective 2-hydroxyestrone pathway), folic acid (cervical folate deficiency correlates strongly with HPV persistence and CIN progression), vitamin D (CD4+ T cells require vitamin D receptor activation to mount an HPV-clearing response), and selenium (selenoproteins protect cervical epithelial cells from HPV-driven oxidative DNA damage). This protocol works as adjunctive support alongside medical monitoring — not as a replacement for gynaecological care.

Safety notice — HIGH

Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.

Licorice root causes sodium retention and potassium depletion, raising blood pressure. Avoid with antihypertensives, diuretics (potassium depletion risk), or digoxin. Daily use exceeding 5g for more than 4 weeks carries significant cardiovascular risk.

High-dose curcumin (above 1g/day) has antiplatelet properties. Use with caution alongside blood thinners. Also lowers blood sugar — monitor closely if on diabetes medications.

Green Tea Extract / EGCG (Camellia sinensis)

EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) from green tea is the most clinically studied natural compound for HPV-associated lesions. A landmark randomised controlled trial published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention demonstrated that topical polyphenon E (green tea extract) cleared 58% of HPV-positive cervical lesions versus 11% placebo. EGCG binds directly to HPV E6 protein, preventing its interaction with p53 — protecting the tumour suppressor pathway HPV uses as its primary mechanism of cell transformation. EGCG also inhibits viral gene transcription and induces apoptosis in HPV-infected keratinocytes without affecting healthy cells.

⚠️ High-dose EGCG supplements (above 800mg/day) may cause elevated liver enzymes — stay within standard dosage. Drink green tea after meals to reduce iron chelation. Avoid in pregnancy at supplemental doses. Contains caffeine — adjust for caffeine sensitivity.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata)

Andrographis is one of the most potent antiviral herbs in Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian traditional medicine. Andrographolide — the primary diterpene lactone — directly targets HPV oncoproteins: studies demonstrate that andrographolide down-regulates E6 and E7 mRNA expression in HPV-positive cervical carcinoma cells (HeLa cells), effectively silencing the viral genes responsible for cancer transformation. Additionally, andrographolide activates apoptosis in HPV-infected abnormal cells through caspase-3/7 pathways while upregulating p53 expression — restoring the tumour suppressor function that E6 destroys.

⚠️ Bitter taste — easier as capsules than tincture. May cause gastrointestinal discomfort at high doses. Blood-thinning effect — caution with anticoagulants. Not in pregnancy (uterine stimulant). Supports but does not replace medical monitoring for cervical lesions.

Ayurveda / Thai Traditional Medicine

Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa)

Cat's claw from the Peruvian rainforest contains pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (POAs) — specifically mitraphylline, isopteropodine, and rhynchophylline — that directly stimulate macrophage and T lymphocyte activation, dramatically upregulating the cell-mediated immune response required to eliminate HPV-infected cells. Quinovic acid glycosides provide direct antiviral activity, while the alkaloids increase interferon gamma production — the cytokine that activates natural killer cells to destroy virally infected epithelial cells. Cat's claw is particularly valuable for individuals with persistent HPV who have not cleared the virus naturally.

⚠️ Not for use in organ transplant recipients or those on immunosuppressive therapy (potent immune activator — may trigger rejection). Not in pregnancy or during breastfeeding. Avoid with blood thinners. Mild nausea possible — take with food.

Amazonian Plant Medicine

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)

Astragalus is the most important herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for rebuilding Wei Qi (defensive immune energy). Astragalosides — particularly Astragaloside IV and cycloastragenol — activate telomerase in immune cells, extending T cell lifespan and preventing immune senescence. Clinical studies in HPV patients show astragalus significantly increases CD4+ T cell counts and NK cell activity — the precise immune cell populations responsible for detecting and eliminating HPV-infected cells. Polysaccharides (APS) stimulate dendritic cells to process HPV antigens more effectively, enhancing the adaptive immune response against the virus.

⚠️ Extremely well tolerated — one of the safest adaptogenic herbs known. Avoid high doses in those with autoimmune conditions (Th1-stimulating — may exacerbate Th1-driven autoimmunity). Not during active fever or acute infection. May reduce efficacy of immunosuppressant medications.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)

Reishi — the 'Mushroom of Immortality' in TCM — contains two primary immunomodulatory compound classes with distinct anti-HPV mechanisms. Triterpenoids (ganoderic acids A, B, C) inhibit NF-κB, reducing the chronic inflammation that impairs immune surveillance of HPV-infected cells. Beta-glucans (particularly GLP — Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide) activate dendritic cells, macrophages, and NK cells, and powerfully stimulate interferon gamma production — the key cytokine that directs CD8+ cytotoxic T cells to destroy HPV-infected epithelium. Reishi specifically activates the Th1 immune response needed to clear viral infections, as opposed to the Th2 response predominant in allergies.

⚠️ Blood-thinning effect at high doses — caution with anticoagulants. May potentiate chemotherapy — inform oncologist if using alongside cancer treatment. Rare cases of liver enzyme elevation at very high doses — use standardised extracts within recommended ranges.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thuja (Thuja occidentalis)

Thuja occidentalis (White Cedar) is the traditional Western herbal and homoeopathic specific for condylomata acuminata (HPV-caused genital warts) and has been used for this purpose since the 19th century. Alpha and beta thujone, along with thujaplicin (beta-thujaplicin or hinokitiol), have demonstrated specific activity against papillomaviruses by disrupting viral protein synthesis and inducing apoptosis in papillomavirus-infected cells. Thuja extract applied topically has a long clinical history of wart resolution. Modern research confirms that thuja oil demonstrates significant cytotoxic activity against HPV-positive cervical cancer cell lines at concentrations achievable clinically.

⚠️ INTERNAL DOSE LIMITS ARE IMPORTANT — thujone is toxic in excess. Internal doses should not exceed 3ml 3× daily. Avoid in pregnancy (potent uterine stimulant, known abortifacient). Not for children. Topical application to mucous membranes should be diluted. Not to be confused with Thuja essential oil, which should NOT be taken internally.

Western Herbalism / Homoeopathy

Turkey Tail Mushroom (Trametes versicolor)

Turkey tail mushroom contains PSK (polysaccharide-K, also called Krestin) and PSP (polysaccharide-peptide) — the most clinically validated mushroom-derived immune compounds in the world. PSK is licensed as a cancer immunotherapy adjuvant in Japan, where it has been used alongside conventional cancer treatment for over 40 years. PSK specifically activates CD4+ helper T cells and NK cells, stimulates interferon production, and has demonstrated direct antiviral activity against several viruses including HPV. A 2012 study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that Turkey Tail supplementation increased NK cell functional activity — the immune cells that kill HPV-infected epithelial cells before they progress to dysplasia.

⚠️ Extremely well tolerated even at high doses. Not for use in organ transplant recipients on immunosuppressive therapy. Rare GI upset in sensitive individuals at high doses. Can be taken long-term without cycling.

Traditional Chinese Medicine / Western Integrative

Turmeric / Curcumin (Curcuma longa)

Curcumin has specific anti-HPV mechanisms documented in multiple in vitro and animal studies. It directly inhibits the transcription factor AP-1 (activator protein 1) — which HPV uses to drive E6 and E7 oncoprotein expression — reducing viral oncogene activity in HPV-positive cells. Curcumin also suppresses NF-κB, reducing the chronic inflammation that creates the permissive tissue environment for HPV persistence, and has demonstrated inhibition of HPV-associated cervical cancer cell proliferation through upregulation of PTEN and downregulation of PI3K/Akt. A 2019 clinical trial found curcumin supplementation in women with HPV-positive low-grade cervical lesions (CIN 1) produced higher regression rates than placebo.

⚠️ Blood-thinning at high supplemental doses — separate from anticoagulants. Avoid concentrated supplements in pregnancy. Standard food amounts are safe. Binds iron — separate from iron supplements by 2–3 hours.

Ayurveda

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)

Elderberry's flavonoids — particularly quercetin, rutin, and anthocyanins — block viral attachment to cell surface receptors by binding to the haemagglutinin-like proteins on virion surfaces, preventing the initial step of HPV infection. Additionally, elderberry's cytokinergic compounds increase the production of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6) at therapeutic levels — stimulating the innate immune response that is the first line of defence against HPV. Elderberry is best used as a broad antiviral foundation in combination with more HPV-specific herbs like EGCG and andrographis.

⚠️ Raw elderberries are toxic — always use cooked syrups, standardised extracts, or properly dried preparations. Very well tolerated at recommended doses. Avoid in autoimmune conditions (immune stimulating). Do not combine with immunosuppressants.

Celtic & Norse Herbalism

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Glycyrrhizin — the primary triterpene saponin of licorice root — inhibits several steps of the HPV replication cycle. It blocks viral gene transcription by preventing the binding of transcription factors required for E6 and E7 expression. Glycyrrhizin also has potent immunomodulatory effects: it stimulates interferon production, activates NK cells, and reduces IL-10 (an immunosuppressive cytokine that HPV exploits to evade immune detection). In the context of HPV, licorice root serves as both a direct antiviral and an immune-enhancing agent. Chinese herbal medicine traditionally uses it as a 'guide herb' — enhancing the activity of other antiviral herbs in formula.

⚠️ Glycyrrhizin causes sodium retention, potassium loss, and hypertension with prolonged use — limit full-glycyrrhizin preparations to 4–6 week courses with 4-week breaks. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated) form is safe long-term but has less antiviral activity. Avoid in hypertension, kidney disease, or oedema. Not in pregnancy.

Broccoli & Broccoli Sprouts

Broccoli sprouts are the richest dietary source of sulforaphane and glucoraphanin, which activate the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway — protecting cervical DNA from HPV-driven oxidative damage — and induce phase II liver detoxification enzymes that shift oestrogen metabolism toward the protective 2-hydroxyestrone pathway. High oestrogen (particularly 16α-hydroxyestrone) activates HPV E6/E7 gene expression; cruciferous vegetables and their I3C/DIM content directly counter this. Multiple studies link higher cruciferous vegetable intake with lower CIN progression rates.

Preparation:

  • Eat ¼ cup raw broccoli sprouts in salads or sandwiches daily — they contain 50–100× more sulforaphane than mature broccoli.
  • Eat 1–2 cups steamed broccoli or other cruciferous vegetables daily.
  • Allow cut or crushed broccoli to sit for 5 minutes before cooking to allow myrosinase to activate glucoraphanin.

Dosage:

  • ¼ cup sprouts + 1–2 cups cruciferous vegetables daily

Western Herbalism

Garlic (Raw & Cooked)

Garlic's organosulphur compounds — allicin, diallyl disulfide (DADS), and diallyl trisulfide (DATS) — have documented anti-HPV mechanisms. DATS induces G2/M cell cycle arrest in HPV-transformed cervical cancer cells and triggers apoptosis through caspase-8 activation. Allicin inhibits viral attachment and penetration of cells. Garlic also powerfully activates macrophages and NK cells — increasing NK cell cytotoxicity against HPV-infected epithelial cells. High garlic intake is consistently associated with reduced cervical cancer risk in population studies.

Preparation:

  • Eat 2–3 raw cloves daily — crush and let sit 10 minutes before eating to maximise allicin formation (allicin is produced by the enzyme alliinase when garlic is damaged and is unstable).
  • Add to salads, hummus, or olive oil.
  • Roasted garlic retains diallyl disulfide activity.

Dosage:

  • 2–3 raw cloves daily

Mediterranean

Shiitake & Maitake Mushrooms

Shiitake's lentinan and maitake's D-fraction are the most studied food-source beta-glucans for antiviral immune activation. Lentinan (isolated from shiitake) is used as an intravenous immunostimulant in Japan alongside cancer treatment; oral consumption of shiitake significantly increases NK cell and macrophage activity within 4 weeks. Maitake D-fraction specifically activates CD4+ helper T cells that coordinate the adaptive immune response against HPV. Both mushrooms reduce IL-10 — an immunosuppressive cytokine that HPV exploits to evade detection.

Preparation:

  • Sauté ½–1 cup shiitake or maitake mushrooms in olive oil with garlic 4–5× per week.
  • Add to soups, stir-fries, and grain bowls.
  • Dried shiitake added to broths retains beta-glucan activity.
  • Avoid overheating — simmer rather than frying at high heat.

Dosage:

  • ½–1 cup cooked, 4–5× weekly

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Brazil Nuts & Selenium-Rich Foods

Selenium deficiency is strongly associated with HPV persistence and progression to CIN. Selenoproteins — enzymes requiring selenium as a cofactor — protect cervical epithelial DNA from the oxidative damage that HPV-driven inflammation causes, which is a key step in the progression from infection to dysplasia. Selenium is also required for optimal NK cell and CD4+ T cell function. A 2019 meta-analysis found significantly lower serum selenium in women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia compared to healthy controls.

Preparation:

  • Eat 2–3 Brazil nuts daily — they are the richest dietary selenium source (68–91mcg per nut).
  • Supplement separately only under guidance as selenium has a narrow therapeutic window (optimal 100–200mcg daily, toxic above 400mcg).
  • Other selenium sources: sunflower seeds, tuna, sardines, eggs.

Dosage:

  • 2–3 Brazil nuts daily (provides approximately 170mcg selenium)

Amazonian Plant Medicine

Dark Leafy Greens (Spinach, Kale, Romaine)

Folate (vitamin B9) deficiency in cervical tissue is the most robustly documented nutritional risk factor for HPV persistence and CIN progression — low cervical folate impairs the methylation of viral DNA binding sites, reducing the ability of the host genome to silence integrated HPV. Multiple epidemiological studies show women with the lowest dietary folate have 5× higher risk of CIN than those with the highest intake. Dark leafy greens are the richest dietary folate source and simultaneously provide vitamin K, iron, and antioxidants that support cervical epithelial health.

Preparation:

  • Eat 2+ cups of raw spinach or kale daily in salads, or lightly wilted.
  • Add lemon juice — vitamin C increases folate bioavailability.
  • Steaming rather than boiling retains folate content.
  • Combine with foods rich in B12 for complete one-carbon metabolism support.

Dosage:

  • 2+ cups daily (raw or lightly cooked)

Mediterranean

Wild Salmon & Vitamin D-Rich Fish

Vitamin D is essential for the function of the T cells and NK cells that clear HPV — vitamin D receptor (VDR) activation is required for CD4+ T cells to mount a full antiviral response. Multiple studies show strong inverse associations between vitamin D levels and HPV persistence and cervical dysplasia. Vitamin D also reduces the NF-κB-driven inflammation that sustains the HPV-permissive cervical microenvironment. Wild salmon provides both vitamin D and omega-3 EPA/DHA, which reduce the prostaglandin E2-driven local immunosuppression in cervical tissue.

Preparation:

  • Eat 150–200g wild salmon, mackerel, sardines, or tuna 3–4× per week.
  • Supplement vitamin D3 separately based on blood levels — target serum 25(OH)D of 40–60ng/mL for optimal immune function.
  • Take vitamin D with K2 for optimal uptake.

Dosage:

  • 150–200g fatty fish 3–4× per week; vitamin D3 supplement 2000–4000IU daily

Mediterranean

Fermented Foods (Kefir, Live Yogurt, Sauerkraut)

The vaginal and cervical microbiome is a critical determinant of HPV persistence: Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiomes (particularly L. crispatus) are strongly associated with spontaneous HPV clearance, while diverse bacterial microbiomes or bacterial vaginosis are associated with persistent HPV. Gut microbiome health influences systemic immune balance — a diverse, Lactobacillus-rich gut supports Th1 immunity (antiviral) over Th2 and Treg dominance that favour HPV evasion. Fermented foods restore beneficial gut bacteria after any antibiotic use and support oestrogen elimination via the oestrobolome.

Preparation:

  • Eat ½ cup of live-culture kefir, plain full-fat yogurt, or sauerkraut daily with meals.
  • Choose unpasteurised varieties where possible.
  • For vaginal microbiome specifically, L.
  • crispatus probiotic supplements are available and may be more directly targeted.

Dosage:

  • ½ cup live-culture fermented food daily

Traditional Korean Medicine (Hanbang)

Turmeric with Black Pepper

Curcumin inhibits the AP-1 transcription factor that HPV requires to drive E6 and E7 oncoprotein expression — directly suppressing the viral genes responsible for cancer transformation. Clinical data show curcumin reduces HPV-positive CIN 1 progression rates. Curcumin also inhibits NF-κB (reducing the inflammatory microenvironment that sustains HPV persistence) and has anti-angiogenic effects (reducing the blood supply to dysplastic lesions). Black pepper piperine dramatically increases curcumin bioavailability, making dietary intake clinically meaningful.

Preparation:

  • Add 1 tsp turmeric + ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper to golden milk, soups, rice, and curries daily.
  • Begin the day with warm turmeric-pepper-lemon water.
  • Take with healthy fats for further absorption enhancement.

Dosage:

  • 1 tsp with every meal (with black pepper always)

Ayurveda

Carrots, Sweet Potato & Orange-Yellow Vegetables

Beta-carotene and other carotenoids are consistently lower in women with HPV-positive cervical intraepithelial neoplasia compared to HPV-negative controls across multiple case-control studies. Beta-carotene and lycopene protect cervical epithelial cells from the oxidative DNA damage driven by HPV infection, and beta-carotene converts to vitamin A, which regulates normal keratinocyte differentiation — opposing the HPV-driven immortalisation and abnormal proliferation of cervical epithelium.

Preparation:

  • Eat 1 medium carrot or ½ cup cooked sweet potato daily.
  • Include a variety of orange and yellow vegetables throughout the week.
  • Cook with oil — beta-carotene is fat-soluble and absorption increases significantly with dietary fat.

Dosage:

  • 1 cup orange/yellow vegetables daily

HPV Immune Clearance Protocol

Western Integrative Medicine

  • A comprehensive daily nutrition protocol designed to support natural HPV immune clearance through three simultaneous strategies: (1) directly inhibiting HPV viral gene expression through dietary compounds (EGCG, curcumin, I3C/DIM); (2) activating and sustaining the CD4+ T cell and NK cell responses required to eliminate HPV-infected epithelial cells; and (3) correcting the micronutrient deficiencies most strongly associated with HPV persistence — folate, vitamin D, selenium, zinc, and beta-carotene.
  • This protocol is evidence-grounded and works as adjunctive support alongside cervical screening — it does not replace medical follow-up but creates the nutritional environment most favourable for immune clearance.
  • Average time for HPV clearance in immunocompetent individuals is 6–24 months; this protocol targets the immunological and nutritional factors that predict faster clearance.

Foods:

  • Green tea (3–5 cups daily)
  • Broccoli sprouts (¼ cup daily)
  • Garlic (2–3 raw cloves daily)
  • Shiitake and maitake mushrooms
  • Wild salmon (3–4×/week)
  • Dark leafy greens (2+ cups daily)
  • Brazil nuts (2–3 daily)
  • Turmeric with black pepper
  • Carrots and orange vegetables
  • Live-culture kefir or yogurt

Timing:

  • Morning ritual: Warm turmeric-lemon-ginger water on waking + green tea (not boiling water) + 2 Brazil nuts
  • Breakfast: Greek yogurt with blueberries and ground flaxseed + broccoli sprout omelette (3 eggs, ½ cup broccoli sprouts, garlic, spinach)
  • Lunch: Wild salmon over large kale and spinach salad with garlic-lemon dressing + shiitake mushrooms + carrots + ¼ cup broccoli sprouts

  • Daily supplements: Vitamin D3 2000–4000IU + Folate 400–800mcg + Green tea extract 400–800mg EGCG + Andrographis (standardised) + Zinc 15–25mg

Cruciferous Oestrogen-Metabolism Diet

Western Integrative Medicine / Functional Medicine

  • This protocol specifically targets oestrogen metabolism as a driver of HPV persistence — high levels of 16α-hydroxyestrone directly activate HPV E6 and E7 oncoprotein expression, accelerating CIN progression.
  • Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) from cruciferous vegetables and its metabolite DIM shift oestrogen metabolism toward the protective 2-hydroxylation pathway and away from the 16α-hydroxylation pathway.
  • A 2000 RCT in Gynecologic Oncology found that I3C supplementation induced regression of CIN 2 and CIN 3 in 50% of treated women versus 0% placebo — the only natural compound with this evidence level for CIN regression.
  • This plan maximises daily I3C and DIM intake through dietary cruciferous vegetables and targeted liver support.

Foods:

  • Broccoli sprouts (daily)
  • Broccoli, cauliflower, kale
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Bok choy and cabbage
  • Radishes and turnips
  • Dandelion root tea (liver support)
  • Milk thistle
  • Lemon and citrus (liver detox)
  • Green tea
  • Olive oil (fat increases I3C absorption)

Timing:

  • Breakfast: Smoothie with broccoli sprouts + kale + lemon + ginger + green tea matcha powder + flaxseeds
  • Lunch: Large cruciferous salad — shredded red cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, radishes, with tahini-lemon dressing; add wild salmon or sardines
  • Dinner: Roasted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower with turmeric and garlic + lentil dal + fermented food side
  • Snacks: Broccoli sprouts on rice cakes, cruciferous vegetable sticks with hummus
  • Daily teas: Dandelion root and milk thistle morning (liver E2 clearance) + green tea × 3 cups
  • Note: Crush or chop cruciferous vegetables and allow 5 min before cooking — myrosinase converts glucosinolates to I3C only when plant cells are ruptured

Traditional Chinese Medicine / Japanese Traditional Medicine

  • Drawing on the rich tradition of East Asian immune-tonifying food-medicine — where medicinal mushrooms, green tea, miso, and specific tonic herbs have been used for centuries to build protective Wei Qi (defensive immunity).
  • This protocol uses daily medicinal mushrooms (shiitake, maitake, turkey tail, reishi) as the foundation of antiviral immune activation, combined with the catechin-rich green tea culture of Japan, fermented soy and miso for microbiome and phytoestrogen balance, and warming antiviral spices.
  • TCM specifically supports 'Zheng Qi' (healthy Qi or vital force) as the defence against pathogens — this plan builds that foundational vitality through consistent medicinal food practices.

Foods:

  • Shiitake mushrooms (daily)
  • Maitake mushrooms
  • Turkey tail powder in tea
  • Matcha green tea (3+ cups daily)
  • Miso soup (live culture)
  • Ginger and turmeric
  • Astragalus root in soups
  • Reishi mushroom tea
  • Natto (fermented soybean)
  • Seaweed (iodine + fucoidan)

Timing:

  • Morning: Reishi-astragalus decoction tea + miso soup with tofu and wakame seaweed + natto with rice
  • Lunch: Shiitake and maitake stir-fry with bok choy, garlic, ginger, tamari over brown rice
  • Afternoon: Matcha green tea with a handful of pumpkin seeds (zinc) and 2 Brazil nuts (selenium)
  • Dinner: Miso broth soup with turkey tail mushroom powder, astragalus root (remove before eating), shiitake, wakame, and salmon
  • Daily addition: 1 tsp turkey tail mushroom powder stirred into green tea — adds PSK beta-glucans to the daily tea ritual
  • Weekly: Reishi-astragalus mushroom broth cooked for 2+ hours — drink 2 cups daily throughout the week as an immune tonic base

16:8 Intermittent Fasting Protocol

Western Integrative Medicine

  • The most researched fasting protocol — eating within an 8-hour window and fasting for 16 hours daily.
  • During the fasting window, the body depletes glycogen and switches to fat oxidation, increasing AMPK activity, insulin sensitivity, and autophagy.
  • Benefits include reduced fasting insulin, improved metabolic flexibility, reduced inflammation markers (CRP, IL-6), and weight management.
  • The eating window is typically 10 am–6 pm or 12 pm–8 pm depending on lifestyle.

Foods:

  • Fasting window (16 hours): water only, black coffee, plain herbal tea, sparkling water
  • Breaking the fast: start with protein and fat — not carbohydrates (blunts the insulin spike after fasting)
  • Eating window (8 hours): normal anti-inflammatory whole foods
  • Avoid: fruit juice, BCAA supplements, bone broth with calories during fasting window — these partially break the fast
  • Electrolytes during fasting window: pinch of sea salt + a few drops of lemon juice if hunger is severe

Timing:

  • 12 pm (break fast): Wild salmon + 2 eggs + spinach + avocado — protein-fat first meal
  • 3 pm: Main nourishing meal — baked chicken + sweet potato + roasted vegetables
  • 6 pm (final meal): Light protein dinner — fish or chicken + non-starchy vegetables only

12 pm — Breaking the Fast

Salmon & Egg Break-Fast Plate

  1. Break your fast with protein and fat — not carbohydrates. This prevents the sharp insulin spike from carbohydrates after a 16-hour fast, maintaining the metabolic benefits.
  2. Scramble eggs slowly in butter on low heat until creamy.
  3. Sauté spinach in olive oil 1–2 minutes. Plate everything with sliced avocado.
  4. Eat slowly. After 16 hours of fasting, the digestive system needs gentle reintroduction — avoid large portions immediately.

3 pm — Main Meal

Herb-Roasted Chicken with Sweet Potato & Vegetables

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Toss sweet potato and vegetables with 2 tbsp olive oil, garlic, and herbs.
  2. Rub chicken with remaining olive oil and herbs. Place on tray with vegetables.
  3. Roast 22–25 minutes until chicken is cooked and vegetables have caramelised edges.
  4. Squeeze lemon over everything before serving.

6 pm — Final Meal (fasting window begins after this)

Light Fish Dinner with Green Vegetables

  1. Pan-sear fish in olive oil 3–4 minutes per side over medium heat.
  2. Steam or roast asparagus and courgette alongside. Wilt spinach in the pan.
  3. Plate and squeeze lemon over everything. Keep the meal light — you want digestion complete before sleep for better overnight autophagy.
  4. Drink herbal tea 30 minutes after. After this, fasting window begins — water, black tea, and herbal tea only until 12 pm tomorrow.

5:2 Modified Fasting Protocol

Western Integrative Medicine

  • Five days of normal eating and two non-consecutive restricted days (500 kcal for women, 600 kcal for men) per week.
  • The calorie-restricted days trigger the same metabolic benefits as full fasting — AMPK activation, reduced IGF-1, increased autophagy — but are more sustainable for most people.
  • The two fasting days should not be consecutive (e.g.
  • Monday and Thursday).
  • On fasting days, the goal is maximum nutrient density within the calorie limit.

Foods:

  • Fasting days: 500–600 total calories divided between 2 small meals
  • Fasting day proteins: eggs (70 kcal each), white fish (120 kcal per 150g), tofu (80 kcal per 100g)
  • Fasting day vegetables: unlimited non-starchy — broccoli, spinach, courgette, cucumber, celery
  • Non-fasting days: normal anti-inflammatory Mediterranean eating — no restriction
  • All days: minimum 2L water, black coffee and herbal tea allowed without breaking fast
  • Avoid: fasting on consecutive days, exercising strenuously on fasting days

Timing:

  • Fasting day breakfast (~150 kcal): 2 eggs any style (140 kcal) + unlimited herbal tea
  • Fasting day dinner (~350–450 kcal): white fish + steamed broccoli + leafy salad with lemon dressing
  • Normal day template: full Mediterranean anti-inflammatory meals without calorie restriction

Fasting Day — Breakfast (~150 kcal)

Two-Egg Fasting Breakfast

  1. Boil, poach, or scramble eggs without added oil or butter on a fasting day.
  2. Season lightly with sea salt. Drink plenty of water.
  3. Black coffee can be taken before this meal — it extends the fasting window's metabolic benefit.
  4. Total: approximately 140–150 kcal. Remaining 350–450 kcal budget is for dinner.

Fasting Day — Dinner (~400 kcal)

Fasting Day White Fish Plate

  1. Steam or bake fish in foil with lemon, herbs, and a tiny amount of olive oil. 15 minutes at 180°C.
  2. Steam broccoli and courgette 5–7 minutes until tender but not mushy.
  3. Dress salad with lemon juice only (no oil) to keep calories low.
  4. Total plate: approximately 335–370 kcal. Well within the 500 kcal fasting day budget.

Non-Fasting Day — Dinner (unrestricted)

Mediterranean Salmon with Legumes

  1. Roast vegetables with 2 tbsp olive oil at 200°C for 20 minutes.
  2. Pan-sear salmon in remaining olive oil 3–4 minutes per side.
  3. Toss chickpeas or lentils through the roasted vegetables.
  4. Plate and squeeze lemon over. Normal day — eat to comfortable fullness.

Circadian Rhythm Eating (Solar Fasting Protocol)

Ayurveda

  • Aligned with Ayurvedic principles of Agni (digestive fire) and modern circadian biology — the digestive system is strongest between 10 am and 2 pm (peak sun, peak metabolic enzyme activity) and weakest after sunset.
  • Eating after dark suppresses melatonin, increases insulin resistance by 20–30%, and disrupts circadian-regulated metabolic processes.
  • This protocol concentrates the largest meal at midday, uses a light early breakfast (or skips it), and ends all eating by 6–7 pm for a 14–16 hour overnight fast.

Foods:

  • Morning (optional, light): small amount of soaked nuts or fruit — never a heavy meal before 9 am when Agni is still awakening
  • Midday (main meal, 11 am–2 pm): largest meal of the day — all food groups, full nutrition
  • Evening (before 6 pm, very light): easily digestible — soup, cooked vegetables, small amount of protein
  • After 6–7 pm: only herbal tea, water — fasting window begins with sunset
  • Avoid: eating after 7 pm (reverses circadian metabolic benefits), heavy breakfast
  • Turmeric
  • Guduchi (Giloy)
  • Kalmegh (Andrographis)
  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
  • Licorice Root (Yashtimadhu)
  • Pippali (Long Pepper)

Timing:

  • Morning 8 am (optional, very light): 30g soaked almonds + 1 small banana + ginger herbal tea
  • Midday 12–1 pm (main meal): Substantial kitchari or grilled fish + rice + roasted vegetables + ghee
  • Evening before 6 pm (light): Clear vegetable soup or congee — never a heavy meal

Morning (8 am) — Optional Light Breakfast

Soaked Almond & Ginger Awakening

  1. The night before: place almonds in a bowl, cover with water, soak overnight at room temperature.
  2. In the morning: drain almonds and peel the skins off (they slide off easily after soaking — peel is astringent).
  3. Eat almonds slowly and chew thoroughly. Digestive enzyme activity is still low at 8 am.
  4. Drink ginger tea alongside — ginger gently awakens Agni without overstimulating digestion.
  5. Keep this meal very small — the purpose is to gently start digestion, not to fully feed.

Midday (12–1 pm) — Main Meal at Peak Agni

Golden Kitchari — Ayurvedic Complete Meal

  1. Rinse mung dal and rice until water runs clear.
  2. Heat ghee in a pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add ginger, turmeric, and coriander. Stir 30 seconds.
  4. Add dal and rice, stir to coat in ghee and spices. Pour in water or broth.
  5. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and cook 25–30 minutes until dal breaks down into a thick, porridge-like consistency.
  6. Stir in cooked vegetables 5 minutes before end. Season with sea salt.
  7. Eat this as the main meal of the day, mindfully, sitting down, without screens. Agni is strongest now.

Evening (before 6 pm) — Light Closing Meal

Light Vegetable Broth Soup

  1. Simmer vegetables in broth with spices 15–20 minutes until very soft.
  2. Blend half or all for a smooth soup if desired. Stir in ghee at the end.
  3. Eat before 6 pm. This should be light and easy to digest — the digestive system is slowing down.
  4. After this meal: only herbal tea and water. The 14–16 hour overnight fast begins here.

72-Hour Autophagy Reset Fast

Western Integrative Medicine

  • An extended 72-hour fast activates deep cellular autophagy (cellular self-cleaning) — the process in which cells break down and recycle damaged organelles, misfolded proteins, and dysfunctional mitochondria.
  • The first 16–24 hours triggers glycogen depletion and ketogenesis; hours 24–72 see peak autophagy and a significant reduction in circulating IGF-1 and inflammatory cytokines.
  • After 72 hours, the immune system undergoes partial renewal (Valter Longo stem cell research).
  • This is an intensive protocol — not for weekly use.
  • Once per month or per quarter for immune reset is appropriate.

Foods:

  • During fast (72 hours): water only, electrolytes (sea salt + potassium from lemon), plain black coffee, plain herbal tea
  • No calories during the fast — bone broth, BCAA supplements, and sweetened teas partially break autophagy
  • Electrolyte maintenance: ½ tsp sea salt + squeeze of lemon in 1L water each day prevents low sodium, headache, and heart palpitation
  • Breaking the fast correctly is critical — refeeding syndrome is a risk after extended fasting. Start with bone broth, not a large meal
  • Not appropriate for: pregnant women, diabetics on insulin, anyone underweight, or anyone with a history of eating disorders

Timing:

  • Evening before Day 1 (pre-fast final meal): high-fat, high-protein — sustains energy into the fast
  • During fast (Days 1–3): water + herbal teas + black coffee + sea salt electrolyte water
  • Breaking the fast (end of Day 3): bone broth first, then 2 hours later soft scrambled eggs and avocado

Evening Before the Fast — Final Pre-Fast Meal

High-Fat, High-Protein Pre-Fast Plate

  1. This meal should be substantial but not overly large. Eat until satisfied, not stuffed.
  2. Roast salmon and vegetables at 200°C for 20 minutes with olive oil.
  3. Scramble eggs in remaining olive oil. Serve everything together.
  4. After this meal: stop eating. The fast begins now. Last coffee or herbal tea allowed until bedtime.

During the Fast (Days 1–3) — Fasting Drink Protocol

Electrolyte Fasting Water

  1. Mix electrolyte water each morning. Drink at least 2.5–3L of fluid daily during the fast.
  2. Sip throughout the day rather than drinking large volumes at once.
  3. Hunger peaks at hours 16–20 and again at hour 36 — these are temporary. After hour 48, many people experience a significant reduction in hunger.
  4. If feeling weak, dizzy, or experiencing heart palpitations: increase sea salt immediately — this is low sodium, not low blood sugar.
  5. Do not exercise intensely during hours 24–48 — light walking only. Light exercise is fine after hour 48.

Breaking the Fast (End of Hour 72) — Refeeding Protocol

Bone Broth Refeeding Sequence

  1. CRITICAL: Do not break an extended fast with a large meal. Refeeding syndrome is a medical risk with electrolyte imbalance.
  2. Start with 200ml warm bone broth. Sip slowly over 20 minutes.
  3. Wait at least 2 hours before eating anything else. Let the digestive system re-activate gently.
  4. First solid meal: 2 scrambled eggs + ¼ avocado + a little cooked spinach. Small portion.
  5. Wait 4 hours before eating a fuller meal. Eat only until moderately satisfied — do not eat a large meal to 'make up' for the fast.
  6. Day after the fast: normal eating resumes. The cells have completed their autophagy cycle.

OMAD — One Meal A Day Protocol

Western Integrative Medicine

  • The most condensed fasting protocol — all daily nutrition consumed within a single 1–2 hour eating window.
  • The 22–23 hour fasting window maximises autophagy, ketogenesis, and AMPK activation.
  • Requires careful nutritional planning to deliver complete macro and micronutrients in a single meal.
  • Best suited to people who have already adapted to 16:8 or 5:2 fasting.
  • Not recommended as a starting point — build up to it over several weeks.
  • Ideal eating window: 5–7 pm (dinner) to preserve social eating and performance throughout the day.

Foods:

  • The single meal must contain: 1.6–2g protein per kg bodyweight, 50–80g healthy fat, adequate fibre (25g minimum), all major micronutrients
  • Start with bone broth (10–15 minutes before the main meal) — re-engages digestive enzymes, provides collagen and electrolytes
  • Main protein: 250–350g salmon, chicken thighs, beef, or eggs
  • Healthy fat: 2–3 tbsp olive oil, ½ avocado, nuts/seeds
  • Complex carbohydrates (optional, especially for active people): 150–200g sweet potato, 1 cup legumes
  • Vegetables: minimum 400g — 4+ different colours
  • Finish: 20–30g dark chocolate + herbal tea

Timing:

  • Pre-meal (10–15 min before): 200ml bone broth — re-activates digestive enzymes, begins appetite signal
  • Main OMAD meal (5–7 pm): complete nutrient-dense plate — protein + fat + vegetables + optional complex carb
  • Post-meal: 20g dark chocolate + herbal tea — antioxidants + gentle digestive support

Pre-Meal (10 minutes before eating)

Digestive Activation Bone Broth

  1. Warm broth gently. Do not boil.
  2. Drink 10–15 minutes before the main OMAD meal.
  3. This re-activates the digestive enzyme cascade that has been dormant for 22+ hours, preventing the digestive distress that can come from eating a large meal after a long fast.

Main OMAD Meal (5–7 pm) — Complete Nutrition in One Plate

Complete OMAD Nourishment Plate

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Bake sweet potato whole 40 minutes (or use pre-cooked from the day before).
  2. Toss broccoli and capsicum with 2 tbsp olive oil, garlic, herbs. Roast 20 minutes alongside the potato.
  3. Pan-sear salmon or chicken in remaining oil, 4 minutes per side for salmon, 6 minutes for chicken. Finish chicken in oven if needed.
  4. Wilt spinach/kale in the hot pan 1 minute.
  5. Assemble the full plate: protein, roasted vegetables, leafy greens, avocado, pumpkin seeds. Squeeze lemon over everything.
  6. Eat slowly over 45–60 minutes. Chew thoroughly — digestive enzyme activity needs this time after a 22-hour fast.
  7. Serve yoghurt or kefir alongside for probiotics.

Post-Meal (30 minutes after eating)

Dark Chocolate & Chamomile Digestive Close

  1. Wait 20–30 minutes after the main meal before eating chocolate — this is a digestive rest period, not an extended eating window.
  2. Eat chocolate slowly, letting it melt.
  3. Sip chamomile tea. The eating window closes after this.
  4. The 22–23 hour fasting window now begins again.
How to Make This

Green Tea & Licorice Antiviral HPV Tea

The most targeted antiviral tea for HPV support — EGCG directly binds HPV E6 protein, protecting p53 tumour suppressor function, while glycyrrhizin from licorice inhibits E6/E7 viral gene transcription. Daily consumption provides continuous antiviral coverage at the mucosal level.

Preparation:

  • Brew 1 tsp high-quality green tea (matcha or gyokuro) at 75°C (not boiling) for 3 min.
  • Add ½ tsp dried licorice root steeped separately in just-boiled water for 5 min.
  • Combine.
  • Add lemon to enhance catechin absorption.

Dosage:

  • 3–4 cups daily between meals.
  • Avoid boiling water — destroys catechins.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Andrographis & Cat's Claw Immune-Antiviral Tea

Combines andrographolide's direct HPV oncoprotein silencing with cat's claw's T cell and NK cell activation. This dual antiviral + immune-stimulating combination addresses both viral load reduction and the immune clearance response simultaneously.

Preparation:

  • Decoct ½ tsp andrographis leaf + 1 tsp cat's claw inner bark in 2 cups water for 15 min.
  • Strain.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon and honey to offset the intense bitterness.
  • Drink warm.

Dosage:

  • 2 cups daily.
  • Note: very bitter — honey helps significantly.

Ayurveda / Amazonian Plant Medicine

Reishi & Astragalus Deep Immune Restoration Tea

A long-term deep immune rebuilding tea specifically designed for individuals with persistent HPV — reishi triterpenoids and astragalus polysaccharides together activate dendritic cells, NK cells, and CD4+ T cells to restore the immune surveillance required for viral clearance.

Preparation:

  • Simmer 5g dried reishi mushroom slices + 15g dried astragalus root in 4 cups water for 30 min.
  • Strain.
  • Add ginger, cinnamon, and honey.
  • Store in the fridge and warm through the day.

Dosage:

  • 2–3 cups daily — this tea requires long simmering to extract active polysaccharides.
  • Prepare a large batch and refrigerate.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Turkey Tail & Green Tea Mycoimmune Tea

Turkey tail PSK combined with EGCG from green tea creates a synergistic antiviral-immune formula — PSK activates NK cells that kill HPV-infected cells, while EGCG targets viral proteins directly. This combination addresses HPV from both an immune activation and a direct antiviral angle.

Preparation:

  • Simmer 8g dried turkey tail mushroom in 3 cups water for 25 min.
  • Remove from heat, add 1 tsp green tea.
  • Steep 3 min.
  • Strain.
  • Add lemon and a small amount of honey.

Dosage:

  • 2 cups daily.
  • The mushroom base amplifies EGCG's antiviral properties.

Traditional Chinese Medicine / Western Integrative

Thuja & Elderberry Antiviral Lymphatic Tea

Thuja provides direct antiviral action against papillomaviruses specifically, while elderberry flavonoids prevent HPV virion attachment to new cells and stimulate innate immunity. Cleavers supports lymphatic drainage of the pelvic region, important for immune cell trafficking to the cervical mucosa.

Preparation:

  • Steep ½ tsp dried thuja leaf + 1 tsp dried elderberries + 1 tsp cleavers herb in just-boiled water for 8 min.
  • Strain.
  • Add honey.

Dosage:

  • 2 cups daily.
  • For condylomata: also use thuja tincture topically.

Western Herbalism

Turmeric, Black Pepper & Ginger Cervical Anti-Inflammatory Tea

How to Make This

Andrographis, Cat's Claw & Astragalus Antiviral Tincture

The definitive antiviral-immune tincture for HPV — this three-herb formula addresses HPV from complementary angles: andrographolide directly silences HPV E6/E7 viral oncogene expression; cat's claw oxindole alkaloids activate T lymphocytes and NK cells needed to kill HPV-infected epithelial cells; astragalus polysaccharides rebuild CD4+ T cell populations depleted by chronic HPV immune evasion. Together these herbs address both viral suppression and the immune activation required for clearance. This is a sustained-use tincture — benefits accrue over 3–6 months.

⚠️ Not in organ transplant recipients (potent immune activator). Not in pregnancy (andrographis is contraindicated). Not with immunosuppressants. Blood-thinning combination — caution with anticoagulants. Andrographis is very bitter — ensure adequate dilution.

Integrated Herbal Medicine

Green Tea Extract, Thuja & Elderberry Antiviral Tincture

A targeted papillomavirus-specific antiviral tincture — green tea EGCG binds HPV E6 protein and prevents viral transformation; thuja thujaplicin has documented anti-papillomavirus activity and has been used specifically for condylomata acuminata (genital warts) in Western herbal medicine for over 150 years; elderberry anthocyanins block viral attachment to host cells and stimulate innate immune activity. This tincture is appropriate for both cervical HPV (internal use) and condylomata (internal and topical diluted application).

⚠️ Thuja limits apply internally — maximum 5ml thuja component per day. Not in pregnancy (thuja). Not for internal mucous membrane application undiluted. Elderberry component is stimulating — avoid with immunosuppressive therapy.

Western Herbalism

Reishi, Turkey Tail & Licorice Mycoimmune Tincture

A medicinal mushroom tincture combining two of the most clinically validated immune fungi for viral conditions. Reishi triterpenoids activate NK cells and stimulate IFN-γ; turkey tail PSK has decades of clinical evidence for antiviral immune activation; licorice glycyrrhizin inhibits HPV gene transcription and potentiates the immune action of the mushroom compounds by modulating cytokine signalling. This formula is particularly suited to those with persistent HPV and immune fatigue.

⚠️ Blood-thinning at high doses (licorice + mushrooms). Limit full glycyrrhizin forms to 6–8 weeks. Monitor blood pressure if using long-term licorice-containing preparations. Not with organ transplant immunosuppression.

Beta-Carotene & Vitamin C Cervical Support Juice

Carotenoid and vitamin C-focused juice that addresses two of the most consistently depleted nutrients in women with cervical HPV — beta-carotene (protective against CIN progression) and vitamin C (required for NK cell cytotoxicity and collagen synthesis in cervical tissue). Preparation:

  • Juice: 3 large carrots + 2 oranges (peeled) + 1 cup spinach + ½ lemon + 1 inch ginger + ½ inch turmeric.
  • Drink fresh immediately — vitamin C oxidises rapidly.
