Catahua (Hura crepitans) is a herb used in the Amazonian Plant Medicine tradition to help with Skin Health, Parasites, Wound Healing, and Fever. The aerial parts and leaves are the parts traditionally used, used both internally and topically.

Botanical background

Hura crepitans, the sandbox tree, also known as possumwood and jabillo, is an evergreen tree of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), native to tropical regions of North and South America, including the Amazon Rainforest. It is recognized by the many dark, pointed spines and smooth brown bark. These spines have caused it to be called Monkey no-climb.

Tea / Infusion

1–3 cups daily
  • Steep 1–2 tsp of dried Catahua in freshly boiled water for 5–10 minutes.
  • Cover while steeping.
  • Strain and drink.

  • Pack dried Catahua into a jar and cover with 40–60% alcohol.
  • Seal and steep for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.
  • Strain and store in a dark dropper bottle.

  • Grind dried Catahua into a fine powder.
