Bijao (Calathea lutea) is a herb used in the Amazonian Plant Medicine tradition to help with Wound Healing, Skin Health, Headache, and Fever. The aerial parts and leaves are the parts traditionally used, used both internally and topically.

Botanical background

Calathea is a genus of plants belonging to the family Marantaceae. There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences. They are commonly called calatheas or (like their relatives) prayer plants. There are several cultivars, such as 'Silver Plate'.

  • Steep 1–2 tsp of dried Bijao in freshly boiled water for 5–10 minutes.
  • Cover while steeping.
  • Strain and drink.

  • Pack dried Bijao into a jar and cover with 40–60% alcohol.
  • Seal and steep for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.
