Anorexia Support

Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder characterised by restriction of food intake leading to significantly low body weight, an intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted perception of body shape or size, with roots in a complex interplay of genetic predisposition, perfectionist and anxious temperament traits, sociocultural pressure, and disrupted interoceptive and reward-processing circuitry in the brain. Chronic caloric restriction triggers profound physiological adaptation: the body downregulates thyroid hormone conversion and reproductive hormone output (often causing amenorrhea) to conserve energy, bone density declines as oestrogen and adequate nutrition are both needed for bone remodelling, cardiac muscle can thin, and the resulting malnutrition itself alters brain chemistry in ways that reinforce restrictive thinking, creating a self-perpetuating neurobiological cycle that makes recovery genuinely difficult without structured support. Refeeding must be carefully managed medically due to the risk of refeeding syndrome. Holistic support (alongside essential medical and psychological treatment): nutrient-dense, calorie-adequate meals reintroduced gradually and consistently; phosphate, magnesium, and potassium monitoring during refeeding; omega-3 fatty acids and zinc to support neurological and taste-function recovery; family or peer-based meal support structures; and gentle, non-punitive movement only once medically cleared, avoiding exercise as compensation.
