Pumpkin Seeds
Cucurbita pepo
The most evidence-supported natural anti-parasitic for pinworms in children β cucurbitin in pumpkin seeds paralyses and expels Enterobius vermicularis without side effects.
Preparation:
- Raw seeds only (not roasted β heat destroys cucurbitin).
- Grind to a fine powder for young children.
- Mix into food: yoghurt, oatmeal, smoothies.
- Alternatively: soak whole raw seeds overnight, blend and strain to drink the liquid.
Dosage:
- Children (2β5y): 1 tbsp ground raw pumpkin seeds, 3Γ daily for 3β5 days.
- Children (6β12y): 2 tbsp 3Γ daily.
- Teens: 3 tbsp 3Γ daily.
- Always with a mild laxative (prune juice) to expel paralysed worms.
Avoid if:
- Must be raw seeds only
- Always follow with a mild laxative to ensure expulsion of paralysed worms
- Whole seeds are a choking hazard for children under 4 β grind thoroughly
Garlic (raw)
Allium sativum
Raw garlic has direct in vitro activity against Enterobius vermicularis β used across Ayurveda, Greek, and traditional European medicine for intestinal worms in children.
Preparation:
- For children: mince 1β2 cloves garlic very finely and mix into food (honey, yoghurt, coconut oil).
- Older children: swallow a small piece with juice.
- Garlic suppository (1 peeled raw clove wrapped in gauze, inserted before sleep) β traditional perianal application to kill eggs.
Dosage:
- Children (2β6y): Β½β1 minced clove in food, 2Γ daily for 5β7 days.
- Children (7β12y): 1β2 cloves daily.
- Perianal gauze application for 3 consecutive nights.
Avoid if:
- Garlic can cause GI upset in young children β start with small amounts and dilute well in food
- Not for infants under 12 months in food
Wormwood
Artemisia absinthium
Traditional anti-helminthic herb β wormwood's absinthin is bitter and antiparasitic. For children over 6 only, at strict doses, and not for prolonged use.
Preparation:
- Standardised extract capsule (not loose herb β bitter and unpalatable).
- Or very weak tea.
- For children over 6 only.
Dosage:
- Children (6β12y): 100 mg standardised extract, once daily for maximum 3 days.
- Teens: 200 mg, once daily for 3 days.
- NEVER exceed recommended dose or use for more than 3 consecutive days.
Avoid if:
- Not for children under 6
- Not for more than 3 days β thujone toxicity risk with prolonged use
- Not during pregnancy
