St. John's Wort induces CYP3A4 liver enzymes and can reduce blood levels of antidepressants (SSRIs — serotonin syndrome risk), hormonal contraceptives, HIV antiretrovirals, cyclosporine (organ transplant), blood thinners, and many other drugs by up to 50%. Consult your doctor before use if taking any prescription medication.
Valerian has additive sedative effects with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other CNS depressants. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery when combining.
Corn Silk
Zea mays (stigma)
Traditional urinary tonic specifically used for bladder control issues in children — corn silk strengthens bladder smooth muscle tone and reduces the urgency that leads to bedwetting.
Preparation:
- Tea: 1 tbsp fresh or dried corn silk in 300 ml boiled water, steep 10 min, strain.
- Serve warm before 4pm (not before bed — gives mild diuretic effect during the day to reduce nighttime overload).
Dosage:
- Children (5–12y): 120 ml corn silk tea, once daily in the afternoon (not evening).
- Teens: 240 ml, once daily, in the afternoon.
Avoid if:
- Do not give in the evening — gives the diuretic benefit in the day to reduce night load
- Not for under 5 years without medical guidance
St John's Wort (for teens — nervous system maturation)
Hypericum perforatum
For older children (10y+) and teens with bedwetting linked to delayed nervous system maturation — St John's Wort's nervine tonic action supports the nerve pathways between the bladder and brain.
Preparation:
- Standard extract (0.3% hypericin) as liquid or capsule.
- For children 10–12y: liquid extract in juice.
Dosage:
- Children (10–12y): 150–300 mg standardised extract, once daily with a meal.
- Teens: 300 mg, 3× daily.
Avoid if:
- Not for under 10 years
- Significant drug interactions — review all medications
- Increases skin photosensitivity
Valerian & Passionflower (for anxiety-related bedwetting)
Valeriana officinalis / Passiflora incarnata
For children whose bedwetting is triggered by anxiety, family stress, or new situations — valerian and passionflower reduce the anxious hyperarousal that prevents deep bladder-awareness sleep.
Preparation:
- Glycerite combination, 30 min before bed.
- Not on nights before important events — may cause heavier sleep which paradoxically could worsen the problem until nervous system matures.
Dosage:
- Children (5–12y): 1 ml each glycerite (or combined blend 2 ml), 30 min before bed.
- Teens: 2–3 ml combined, at bedtime.
Avoid if:
- Only at bedtime
- Not for under 5 years
