Tropical Basil (Selasih) (Ocimum americanum) is a herb used in the Jamu tradition to help with Fever, Digestive Issues, Headache, and Stress. The aerial parts and leaves are the parts traditionally used, taken internally.

Botanical background

Ocimum americanum, known as American basil or "hoary basil", is an annual herb with white or lavender flowers. It is used for medicinal purposes. Despite the misleading name, it is native to Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, China, Southeast Asia. The species is naturalized in Queensland, Christmas Island, and parts of tropical America.

  • Steep 1–2 tsp of dried Tropical Basil (Selasih) in freshly boiled water for 5–10 minutes.
  • Cover while steeping.
  • Strain and drink.

  • Pack dried Tropical Basil (Selasih) into a jar and cover with 40–60% alcohol.
  • Seal and steep for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.
