Henna (Lawsonia inermis) is a herb used in the Caribbean Folk Medicine tradition to help with Skin Health, Hair Health, Headache, and Fever. The aerial parts and leaves are the parts traditionally used, used both internally and topically.

Botanical background

Lawsonia inermis, also known as hina, the henna tree, the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet, is a flowering plant and the sole species of the Lawsonia genus. It is the source of the dye henna used to dye skin, hair and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather.

Tea / Infusion

1–3 cups daily
  • Steep 1–2 tsp of dried Henna in freshly boiled water for 5–10 minutes.
  • Cover while steeping.
  • Strain and drink.

20–40 drops in water, 2–3× daily
  • Pack dried Henna into a jar and cover with 40–60% alcohol.
  • Seal and steep for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.
  • Strain and store in a dark dropper bottle.

  • Grind dried Henna into a fine powder.
