Blood Root (Sanguinaria canadensis) is a herb used in the Western Herbalism tradition to help with Respiratory Issues, Cough, Skin Health, and Inflammation. The root is the part traditionally used, used both internally and topically.

Botanical background

Sanguinaria canadensis, bloodroot, is a perennial, herbaceous flowering plant native to eastern North America. It is the only species in the genus Sanguinaria, included in the poppy family Papaveraceae, and is most closely related to Eomecon of eastern Asia.

Decoction

1–2 cups daily
  • Add 1–2 tsp of dried Blood Root to 2 cups of cold water.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15–20 minutes.
  • Strain and drink warm.

20–40 drops in water, 2–3× daily
  • Pack dried Blood Root into a jar and cover with 40–60% alcohol.
  • Seal and steep for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.
  • Strain and store in a dark dropper bottle.

500 mg – 1 g, 1–3× daily
  • Grind dried Blood Root into a fine powder.
  • Fill size 00 capsules or stir into smoothies or honey.
