The Compound: Curcumin

Turmeric root (Curcuma longa) contains 2–8% curcuminoids, of which curcumin is the most studied. Curcumin is a polyphenol that inhibits multiple inflammatory pathways simultaneously — NF-κB, COX-2, and LOX enzymes — giving it broad anti-inflammatory effects comparable to some NSAIDs without GI damage.

The Bioavailability Problem

Raw turmeric powder has very poor bioavailability — curcumin is fat-soluble, rapidly metabolised, and poorly absorbed in the gut. Standard powder delivers only ~1% to the bloodstream. This is why 'golden milk' recipes have evolved: fat (coconut milk) and piperine (black pepper) together increase absorption by up to 2,000%.

Optimised Forms

Modern formulations solve the bioavailability problem: phytosome forms (curcumin bound to phosphatidylcholine), micellar preparations, and BCM-95 are all significantly better absorbed than raw powder. Look for these on labels if taking therapeutically for inflammation.

Clinical Uses

Turmeric has the strongest evidence for: osteoarthritis pain (equivalent to ibuprofen in several trials), inflammatory bowel conditions, metabolic syndrome, and as an adjunct in cancer care. Emerging evidence supports neurological applications via its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Cautions

High doses can thin blood — avoid before surgery or with anticoagulants. Turmeric stimulates bile production and can trigger gallbladder attacks in those with gallstones. Avoid therapeutic doses in pregnancy.
